For the past year or so, I’ve had a new helper in the studio…

Introducing Amaterasu (Amachan for short)!

This beautiful black shiba came into my life just over a year ago (many thanks to my friend and Japanese teacher Minako who helped me find her) and has grown into a fantastic companion and source of joy in that time.

She keeps me very active (I’ve lost a lot of weight since meeting her!), is a big help with lighting practice, and has been instrumental in feeling much more part of my local community.

It’s amazing how much more approachable you become with a dog on the end of a leash.

Pets were always incredibly important to me growing up in Australia, and she is my first pet after almost ten years in Japan. I’ve never had a dog before, so there has been a lot to learn.

She’s well behaved, although perhaps a bit TOO friendly sometimes, and maybe a little spoilt with toys and attention.

Now that she’s a bit older, I hope to start taking her on some of my domestic photographic landscape tours.

For now, if you’d like to see more of her, she has her very own Instagram account!
